Superintendent Sirko says goodbye

Superintendent Diana Sirko says running Aspen’s schools has been an education in itself. And as her last week at the helm nears a close, Dr. Sirko was toasted by colleagues, parents, teachers and students Wednesday afternoon at the Red Mountain Grill at the Aspen Golf Course.

Sirko is leaving the Aspen School District to become a deputy commissioner with the state department of education in Denver.

When she takes over the state post on June 14, Sirko will be tasked with developing and implementing a new statewide testing program to replace the Colorado Student Assessment System.

MONTE VISTA – Gov. Bill Ritter today signed three important bills that will help rural Colorado by encouraging development of hydro-electric facilities, protecting Colorado’s potato export market and providing financial security to senior citizens. Broomfield, Colorado May 21st, 2010: Senator Gail Schwartz received unanimous support from the delegates at the Senate District 5 Assembly to seek re-election for a second term in the Colorado Senate. Senator Schwartz received the endorsement of US Congressman John Salazar who told the assembled delegates, “No one has worked harder to represent the people of this district than Gail Schwartz”. She was recognized by a large crowd from throughout the eleven counties in her District for her efforts on their behalf.

Lawmakers OK bill allowing wildlife crossing zones

ASPEN, COLO. — Colorado lawmakers have approved a bill designed to reduce collisions between vehicles and wildlife on state highways.

The bill authorizes the Colorado Department of Transportation to create up to 100 miles of special wildlife crossing zones on roadways after consulting with the state Division of Wildlife and State Patrol. Speed limits would be reduced in the zones at night and fines for speeding would be doubled.

Special signs would designate wildlife crossings.

The bill was passed in the last days of the legislative session, which ended Wednesday.

Local lawmakers see 80 percent of their bills pass

DENVER — With the conclusion of the Colorado General Assembly's 2010 session last week, all the bills have been reconciled.

Some passed, some failed. Eying a breakdown of the pass-fail ratio of local lawmakers isn't exactly a scientific approach, and it certainly doesn't take into account every factor. Some of those are the ease with which feel-good resolutions are passed, or the challenge that lawmaker accept when they run a particularly polarizing bit of legislation.
